Uncertainty persists over LPG e-KYC deadline extension and enforcement practices

The September 14 deadline for LPG biometric e-KYC remains uncertain amid conflicting reports on enforcement and official government orders, leaving consumers unsure of potential service disruptions.

The message circulating among LPG customers says the biometric e-KYC deadline is 14 September, but the picture is less clear than the warnings suggest. While several reports have said the date has been pushed back again for Indane, HP Gas and Bharat Gas users, another report noted that there has been no confirmed government order saying every consumer who misses the deadline will lose service. That leaves many households uncertain about what happens next.

The e-KYC requirement is meant to verify that domestic LPG connections are being used by the right customer through Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. Reports on the latest extension say the deadline has been moved several times already, with earlier cut-offs including 16 August, 23 August, 31 August and 7 September before the latest date of 14 September was circulated.

There is also uncertainty over enforcement. Some reports say customers who do not complete the process could face disruption in LPG-related services or have to deal with different billing terms, but no clear final action has been formally explained in the material reviewed. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has not, according to one report, announced that services will simply be stopped for all consumers whose biometric authentication is incomplete.

Consumers who have not yet updated their details can still complete the process through their oil company’s digital platform or by visiting their local distributor. Offline forms typically require the customer’s name, photograph, consumer number, date of birth, parents’ names, address, mobile number and email details. The purpose, according to the reports, is to reduce गलत or duplicate usage and make sure subsidised domestic cylinders reach genuine users.
