India’s Central Board of Direct Taxes has further extended the deadlines for tax audits and income tax return submissions for the 2026-27 assessment year, providing taxpayers and advisers additional time amid ongoing compliance adjustments.
Taxpayers whose accounts must be audited have been given more time to complete their filings for the 2026-27 assessment year, after India’s Central Board of Direct Taxes moved both the income tax return deadline and the tax audit report deadline.
According to the Income Tax Department’s announcement on X, the filing deadline for people covered under the relevant audit category has been pushed back from 31 October, 2026, to 21 November, 2026. The same change applies to the audit report due date, which has been shifted from 30 September, 2026, to 21 October, 2026. Reuters-style reporting from tax industry publications said the extension is meant to give taxpayers and their advisers more time to finish the audit process before the return is filed.
The revised timetable applies to taxpayers covered under the specified provision of section 139 of the Income-tax Act, 1961, a category that includes those subject to audit requirements. Industry summaries published after the CBDT announcement said the extra time should ease pressure on chartered accountants and their clients, particularly because the audit report must now be completed before the return can be submitted. The latest change also sits alongside earlier deadline adjustments for other taxpayer groups, including non-audit filers, whose due dates were already extended separately for the same assessment year.
