The Income Tax Department has introduced an online utility for ITR-7 filings for Assessment Year 2026-27, facilitating easier submissions for trusts, trusts and other exempt entities amidst the upcoming filing deadlines.
The Income Tax Department has opened the online filing utility for ITR-7 for Assessment Year 2026-27, allowing eligible trusts, institutions and other exempt entities to begin submitting returns through the e-filing portal. According to reports from LiveMint and Moneycontrol, the update is aimed at organisations that file under the special provisions of the Income-tax Act, including charitable and religious trusts, political parties, research bodies, universities, colleges, hospitals and similar institutions.
ITR-7 applies to taxpayers required to file under sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C) and 139(4D) of the Act, which cover a wide range of entities claiming exemption or operating under specific legal conditions. The newly enabled utility means filers can now prepare, validate and submit returns online rather than waiting for further support, while the department’s portal also supports the technical checks needed before final submission, according to the reports.
The release comes as the filing season gathers pace for exempt organisations, which are often required to reconcile audit reports, donation records, grant receipts and exemption claims before filing. LiveMint, Moneycontrol and Angel One reported that the filing deadline depends on audit status: non-audit cases are generally due by August 31, 2026, while entities whose accounts require audit have until October 31, 2026.
Tax advisers say early filing can help avoid last-minute technical problems and reduce the risk of compliance lapses that could affect exemption claims. For organisations using ITR-7, the immediate task is to confirm registration details, audit requirements, disclosures on income and fund application, and e-signature or verification rules before completing the return.
