India’s wholesale inflation surges to 11.39% as oil costs squeeze supply chains

India’s Wholesale Price Index has accelerated sharply to 11.39%, driven by surging crude, fuel and power costs and raising concerns over business margins and future consumer prices.

India’s wholesale inflation has jumped sharply, with the Wholesale Price Index rising to 11.39% in September, according to Business Today’s reporting on the latest data and market commentary from DSP Mutual Fund. The increase marks a steep acceleration from 0.8% a year earlier and reflects a broad build-up in cost pressures across the supply chain, particularly in energy-linked inputs.

The main driver has been surging oil-related costs. The New Indian Express reported that crude petroleum and natural gas prices rose 57.32% year on year, while fuel and power inflation climbed to 25.85%. Within manufactured goods, prices also moved higher across key categories, including basic metals, chemicals, textiles, and rubber and plastic products. Together, those readings suggest that the latest inflation spike has not been confined to one narrow segment of the economy.

That matters because wholesale price increases often feed into business costs before reaching consumers. As Business Today noted, higher crude prices can lift freight charges, fuel bills, and the cost of petroleum-based raw materials, squeezing margins for companies that cannot quickly pass those increases on to buyers. If firms do decide to raise prices, the impact may take time to show up in retail inflation, depending on demand and competition.

The latest wholesale numbers also sit alongside firmer consumer-price readings. Business Today said consumer inflation rose to 5.5% in September from 1.4% a year earlier, while core consumer inflation, which excludes food and fuel, edged up to 4.5% from 4.3%. That gap underscores an important distinction: wholesale and retail inflation are measured differently and at different stages of the supply chain, so a jump in WPI does not mechanically translate into the same rise in household prices.

Even so, the outlook remains sensitive to energy markets. India Ratings and Research has warned that wholesale inflation could stay in double digits for several months, with adverse base effects and elevated energy prices likely to keep pressure on prices well into early 2027. For policymakers, the key question is whether the current burst in inflation remains concentrated in volatile energy items or becomes more broad-based. For businesses and investors, the concern is whether persistent oil-price strength will continue to strain margins, complicate pricing decisions and add another layer of uncertainty to the growth outlook.
