Delay in tax refunds often caused by simple errors, says Indian Income Tax Department

While many taxpayers experience swift refunds, delays often stem from mismatched bank details, identity verification issues, or technical glitches, underscoring the importance of accurate and verified records during filing.

Many taxpayers are finding that refunds can arrive astonishingly quickly, but not everyone is seeing the same speed. According to India’s Income Tax Department e-filing portal, more than 6 crore returns had been filed by 4 August, with over 5.65 crore verified and more than 3.63 crore processed. That means a large pool of refunds is moving through the system, yet some filers are still waiting for money that appears to have stalled after submission.

The difference often comes down to simple but costly errors. Chartered accountant Santosh Mishra, quoted by informalnewz.com, said refunds can fail to land because of mismatched bank details, a bank account that has not been pre-verified, a closed or dormant account, an invalid IFSC code, or a name that does not match the PAN record. Other common snags include PAN deactivation, technical problems during transfer, rejection by the bank, or an old tax demand being adjusted against this year’s refund. Mint has separately reported that Aadhaar-PAN mismatches and inconsistent information in the return are also frequent causes of delay.

For taxpayers, the practical issue is not just whether the return has been processed, but whether the refund has actually been released and accepted by the bank. The Income Tax Department’s own guidance says refund status can be checked by logging into the e-filing portal and looking under filed returns, which helps confirm whether the delay sits with the tax department or with the bank-side transfer. In many cases, refunds can arrive within 24 hours of processing, but some take four to five weeks, especially when extra checks are needed.

The department also expects taxpayers to keep PAN, Aadhaar, bank details and the e-filing profile correctly linked and active. If a notice or demand alert has been issued, it needs to be checked carefully, because an unresolved mismatch can lead to the refund being set off against another liability or held back pending verification. Informalnewz.com warns that this is also the point at which fraudsters often try to exploit anxiety, so official email and portal messages are safer than clicking on unexpected links in texts or messages.

For Indian households and salaried workers, the takeaway is straightforward: a fast refund is possible, but only if the return, bank account and identity records all line up cleanly. For anyone waiting longer than expected, the likely issue is usually administrative rather than permanent loss of money.
