UMANG app aims to simplify provident fund management amid user access issues

The UMANG app offers salaried workers a consolidated platform for PF passbooks, balance checks, and claims, though users report access disruptions, prompting alternative options.

For millions of salaried workers, the monthly provident fund deduction can feel like money that is hard to keep track of. The UMANG, or Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, app is designed to make that easier by putting a range of EPFO services in one place, including PF passbook access, balance checks and claim tracking, according to HDFC Life and app descriptions in the App Store.

Through the app, users can log in with their Universal Account Number, or UAN, and registered mobile number to see their passbook and check how much has accumulated in their account. The passbook can also be downloaded as a PDF, while the same workflow can be used to review remittance details and, in some cases, balance across more than one PF account, according to HDFC Life and the App Store listing for a PF balance-check app built around UMANG services.

The app is also meant to be useful when money is needed urgently. EPFO claim services can be accessed through UMANG, allowing subscribers to apply for an advance and then follow the progress of that request through a claim-status feature. If there is a problem with a PF-related process, the app also offers a route to file a complaint, which can save a trip to a government office, according to TV9 Hindi and HDFC Life.

That said, some users have recently reported that EPFO features inside UMANG have not always been accessible. Kalamtimes said PF balance checks, passbook views, claim filing and claim tracking were not working for some members at the time of its report. Even so, alternative routes such as the EPFO passbook portal, a missed call service and SMS alerts remain available, according to RapidCheck, giving subscribers other ways to monitor their provident fund if the app is unavailable.
