Amid fluctuating rates, smaller Indian lenders are leading with some of the highest FD returns, surpassing major banks and foreign institutions, as the deposit rate competition intensifies.
Fixed deposit rates across Indian banks remain a moving target, and the latest comparison shows that smaller lenders are still offering some of the most aggressive returns to attract savers. According to data compiled by BankBazaar from banks’ own websites and published on August 7, the top rates for ordinary depositors now reach 8.1% on some tenures at Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, while several other small finance banks are also above 7.5% on medium-term deposits.
Among foreign lenders, DBS Bank is offering 6.85% on deposits of 1 to 2 years, while Standard Chartered has lifted its 1 to 2 year rate to 6.6%. Deutsche Bank stands out with 7% for the same slab, although its shortest-tenure rate is far lower at 5%, underlining how sharply returns can vary by bank and maturity. HSBC remains at the lower end of the foreign-bank range, with 4.1% on deposits of less than a year.
In the public sector, most large banks cluster in the mid-6% range for 1 to 2 year deposits. Bank of India and Canara Bank are both offering 6.6% on that slab, while Central Bank of India is slightly higher at 6.7%. State Bank of India’s posted rate is 6.45%, and Bank of Baroda is at 6.6%. CodeforBanks’ rate pages for Bank of India and Canara Bank also show that these figures are periodically revised and can differ by deposit size, tenure and senior-citizen status.
Private banks continue to offer a wider spread. DCB Bank leads the pack in the table with 7.5% across the 1 to 5 year bracket, while Bandhan Bank, IDFC First Bank and several others are also above 7% on select tenures. In the small finance bank category, Jana Small Finance Bank is quoting 8% for 2 to 3 years, Suryoday Small Finance Bank is at 8.1% for the same term and Equitas Small Finance Bank is offering 8% on 3 to 5 year deposits. FinancialCalculator.io’s tracker, updated on August 1, says the highest general FD rate across the market is 8.6%, with the top senior-citizen rate at 8.85%, reinforcing that the best returns are now coming from niche lenders rather than the biggest names.
