The Unique Identification Authority of India has launched a new version of the Aadhaar app allowing users to store and manage credentials for up to five family members on one smartphone, aiming to streamline access and reduce reliance on physical cards.
India’s Unique Identification Authority has rolled out an updated Aadhaar mobile app that lets users keep details for up to five family members on one smartphone, part of a push the agency describes as “One Family One App”. India Today reported that the app is meant to cut the need for multiple physical cards or separate devices when family members need access to Aadhaar credentials.
According to the UIDAI, the app is available on Android and iOS and requires users to register with an Aadhaar number, select the relevant SIM, complete face authentication and set a six-digit PIN. Business Standard reported that the update also includes mobile number and address changes, biometric locking and unlocking, encrypted sharing and other family-account features.
The app can also be used to add a child’s profile in some cases. India Today said this is possible when the guardian relationship was established through biometric authentication at enrolment, while a child who has completed a mandatory biometric update can instead authenticate through face recognition.
The service is broader than simple profile storage. India Today said users can download e-Aadhaar, check authentication history, share contact cards, track requests and share verifiable credentials with consent. But not every update can be handled in the app: name, gender, email, date of birth, photographs, fingerprints and iris data still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment and update centre.
