Girija Subramanian has assumed her role as Whole-time Member for Distribution at IRDAI, strengthening the regulator’s efforts to expand insurance coverage across India amid a broader focus on distribution strategies.
Girija Subramanian has joined the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India as Whole-time Member for Distribution, with the regulator saying she assumed charge on August 10, 2026. The appointment gives IRDAI another senior figure at a time when distribution remains central to efforts to widen insurance coverage and improve access to products across India.
According to earlier reports from India Today and the Financial Express, the central government had appointed Subramanian and Dinesh Pant as whole-time members for five years or until they reached 62, whichever came first. Those reports said Subramanian previously served as chairman and managing director of New India Assurance, giving her extensive experience in the general insurance sector.
The move brings the number of whole-time members at IRDAI to four. The regulator’s annual report for 2024-25 showed that distribution is one of the key functional areas at the authority, alongside finance and investments, life and non-life insurance. Subramanian’s earlier career also included a long stint in the insurance industry, including senior roles at General Insurance Corporation-Re and later at Agriculture Insurance Company of India, according to a 2022 profile in Whispers in the Corridors.
