EPFO shifts UAN services to UMANG app with Aadhaar face authentication

Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has transitioned UAN allotment and activation processes from its web portal to the government’s UMANG app, leveraging Aadhaar-based face authentication to streamline mobile-first access for members.

Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation members who need a new Universal Account Number, or need to activate one they already have, are now being pushed off EPFO’s web portal and on to the government’s UMANG app, where both tasks are tied to Aadhaar-based face authentication. On Tuesday, EPFO’s member portal was displaying notices saying both direct UAN allotment and UAN activation through the site had been discontinued, in line with earlier reporting by Moneycontrol and NDTV India that the web route had been withdrawn after a broader systems overhaul. For workers entering the EPF system for the first time, and for those sitting on an inactive UAN, the shift turns what used to be a more fragmented process into a mobile self-service journey. Business Today framed the move as part of EPFO’s wider digital drive to simplify access and cut dependence on physical or manual verification, while Times Now Navbharat said members can now complete the process from home instead of making office visits. The Labour Ministry has presented the change as a way into a much larger bundle of online services. In a post on X quoted by The Economic Times, it said: “Now, through the UMANG app, you can allot, activate and authenticate your UAN (Universal Account Number).” Once that number is live, members can use it to check provident fund balances, download passbooks, follow claim status and handle some know-your-customer tasks. The Economic Times also noted that UMANG, short for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, was developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the National e-Governance Division. For people who do not yet have a UAN, the new flow starts with three essentials: a valid Aadhaar number, a mobile number linked to Aadhaar for one-time-password verification, and access to the Aadhaar Face RD app. Users open UMANG, choose “UAN Allotment and Activation”, enter Aadhaar and mobile details, consent to validation and submit the OTP. The app then checks whether that Aadhaar number is already attached to an existing UAN. If it is not, the user moves to a face scan and, after a successful match, receives the new UAN by SMS. Outlook Money and Business Today both reported that if Aadhaar is already linked to a UAN, the app flags that instead of issuing a second number. (businesstoday.in)

Members who already have a UAN but never activated it must use a different option inside the app. Moneycontrol said the user is asked for the 12-digit UAN, Aadhaar number and Aadhaar-linked mobile number before moving to face authentication. NDTV India’s step-by-step guide adds more detail: users first register on UMANG with the Aadhaar-linked mobile number and set a four-digit M-PIN. During the face scan, the app shows a green circle when the image has been captured properly, then displays basic details such as name and date of birth before submission. If verification succeeds, activation is completed and a temporary password is sent by SMS. (moneycontrol.com)

EPFO has also created a route for members whose UANs are already active but whose records still need biometric confirmation. Outlook Money reported that the “Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs” option can pull in the registered mobile number alongside Aadhaar-linked details and refresh EPFO’s records automatically. Business Today said the verified information can include the member’s photograph and address, reducing the need for separate authentication steps later. (outlookmoney.com)

The practical significance of the switch is that UAN-related onboarding is now clearly being treated as a mobile-first function rather than a portal feature. Moneycontrol linked the change to an upgraded Unified Member Portal rolled out in phases from 3 July, saying the revamp was intended to improve security, reliability and user experience. NDTV India said the policy followed a major database consolidation and software upgrade designed to make online services faster and more dependable. EPFO’s own portal now directs anyone who needs help with the new process to its 14470 helpdesk. (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in)

The shift does not remove the usual chances of user error. Outlook Money and The Economic Times said members can still run into invalid Aadhaar or mobile details, failed OTP delivery, face-authentication errors or a warning that a UAN already exists. NDTV India reported that users checking their status after completion may even see the message, “The UAN entered is already activated”. In practice, that means the safest response to an error is usually to correct the details or retry the scan, not to attempt creating another UAN. (outlookmoney.com)
