Bank Syariah Indonesia expands hybrid model with on-site services at government offices

Bank Syariah Indonesia is pioneering a hybrid banking approach by integrating digital services with physical service points, such as its new gallery at the Health Ministry in South Jakarta, to meet diverse customer needs in Jakarta’s expanding Islamic finance market.

Bank Syariah Indonesia is pressing ahead with a hybrid model that combines digital banking with physical service points, even as more routine transactions move online. The latest example is a BSI Gallery at Indonesia’s Health Ministry in South Jakarta, which is designed to let staff handle everyday banking matters without leaving their workplace. Anton Sukarna, BSI’s director of sales and distribution, said the bank still sees demand for face-to-face services because customer needs vary, even with online account opening now available through BYOND by BSI.

The new service point reflects a broader push by BSI to deepen its reach in Jakarta, which the bank views as a key market for expanding Islamic finance. Sukarna said BSI wants to be closer to customers in office buildings and government institutions, not only through branches but also through smaller outlets in high-traffic locations. The gallery at the Health Ministry is backed by Danantara Indonesia, the state investment agency.

At the gallery, customers can open accounts, access gold-related services such as instalments and pawning, use Bank Emas services through BYOND, and apply for sharia-based micro business financing. Other services include cash deposit and withdrawal machines, card replacement, banking consultations and the BSI Hasanah Card. Kunta Wibawa Dasa Nugraha, the ministry’s secretary-general, said the presence of banking services on site should make it easier for employees to access financial products quickly, safely and conveniently during the working day.

BSI now operates 15 BSI Galleries across several locations, while its wider network in Greater Jakarta exceeds 250 outlets. The bank has also been widening its digital and agency channels, including BYOND by BSI, BSI Call 14040, BSI Net Banking, BSI ATM, BEWIZE by BSI and roughly 126,000 BSI agents. In earlier statements, the bank said it has also expanded BSI Gallery into shopping centres, hospitals and other public spaces as part of a plan to make sharia banking more accessible across Indonesia.
