Truecaller launches Scam Checker in India, pioneering a new wave of web-based fraud detection to combat rising scam tactics across messages and links, with plans to expand globally.
Truecaller is pushing further beyond its caller-identification roots with the launch of Scam Checker, a new service designed to help people spot fraud in phone numbers, messages and web links. The tool is available first in India, where users can access it on the web and through the Android app without signing in or installing anything extra, according to reports from TechCrunch and other technology publications.
The move reflects a broader shift in how scammers operate. Rather than relying only on nuisance calls, fraudsters increasingly use text messages, messaging apps and malicious URLs to lure victims into handing over money or personal details. Truecaller’s new service is meant to address that wider threat by letting users paste in a suspicious number, message or link and check it against the company’s fraud systems.
According to TechCrunch, Scam Checker expands shortened links, follows redirects and compares the destination with Truecaller’s fraud database and crowd-sourced scam reports. That approach is intended to make the service useful even when a scammer tries to disguise the final web address. The company’s ScamFeed system, which relies on user-submitted reports, is also part of the warning process.
Truecaller has said India is the first market for the rollout, with plans to expand the service to Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and South-east Asia. The company told TelecomTalk that its community has already submitted 20,000 live scam reports in India, with about 1,300 new reports added each week. TelecomTalk also reported that, in one week in September, Truecaller’s systems analysed 12.9 billion messages worldwide and detected more than 20 million fraudulent messages, underlining the scale of the problem the company is trying to address.
