Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched ‘OneTag’, a new feature enabling motorists to change their FASTag issuer bank without replacing the sticker, streamlining toll payments and enhancing user convenience across India.
Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has launched “OneTag”, a new portability feature for FASTag users that lets motorists change their issuer bank without replacing the sticker on their windscreen, according to the Press Information Bureau. The service was unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai and is being positioned as a simpler way to move between banks while keeping the same tag on the vehicle.
The change removes a step that previously forced drivers to close an existing FASTag account, complete fresh onboarding and obtain a new physical tag if they wanted to switch banks. Under OneTag, the vehicle’s FASTag tag ID and registration number stay the same, while only the issuer bank changes, according to the government’s announcement and reports from The Times of India.
The facility will be offered through the National Highways Authority of India’s Rajmargyatra mobile app. The process includes eligibility checks, secure verification, customer consent and selection of a new issuer bank, before the new bank completes its own onboarding requirements, the PIB said. The initiative has been developed by Indian Highways Management Company Ltd., which is promoted by NHAI, together with the National Payments Corporation of India, which will handle the technology framework and update issuer details within the national electronic toll collection network.
Officials say the system is intended to give motorists more choice while cutting unnecessary tag replacement. FASTag penetration has already crossed 98% of India’s toll network, with about 13 crore tags issued and roughly 6 crore active, according to the government. Gadkari also said the next goal is barrier-free tolling, with a multi-lane free-flow model using FASTag and automatic number-plate recognition technology and a target of toll plazas that no longer require vehicles to stop by March 2027.
