Google Pay in India introduces AI-driven conversational finance assistant with Gemini models

Google has rolled out ‘Ask Google Pay’, a conversational AI feature powered by Gemini models, enabling users in India to understand spending patterns, find savings, and access financial insights through natural language queries, with privacy controls central to the rollout.

Google has added an artificial intelligence layer to Google Pay in India, introducing a conversational finance assistant called “Ask Google Pay” that lets users query their spending patterns in natural language. According to Google’s India support pages, the tool can explain where money has gone, surface trends in transaction history and offer savings suggestions, while also flagging relevant offers such as credit cards that may suit a user’s behaviour.

The company says the feature is powered by Gemini models and is designed as an educational aid rather than professional financial advice. Users can type or speak questions about categories such as food, shopping or other recurring expenses, and the system can return summaries with visual breakdowns to make the data easier to understand. Google also says the assistant can answer basic questions on subjects including systematic investment plans, credit scores and compound interest.

Privacy controls are central to the rollout. Google says activation is opt-in through personalisation settings, which are off by default, and that transaction data and linked credit information remain within Google Pay rather than being used to train broader AI models. The company also says sensitive details such as full account numbers and government identifiers are excluded from processing.

The launch fits into a broader push by Google to expand Gemini in India. Google’s Gemini pages say the assistant supports multiple Indian languages and is available through free and paid tiers, while TechCrunch reported earlier this year that Google had begun bringing its Gemini personal intelligence features to the Indian market. Google has also been widening its financial services presence in the app by adding the Google Pay Flex SBI Card, a digital credit product linked to its payments ecosystem.
