Recent reports suggesting new charges on UPI payments above Rs 2,000 have caused confusion. Fact-checks confirm that only merchant payments made through prepaid wallets above this threshold will incur a fee, leaving most consumer-to-consumer transactions unaffected.
A report circulating online has claimed that UPI payments above Rs 2,000 will soon attract a charge, but the detail that matters most for ordinary users is that this is not a fresh levy on all UPI transfers. Fact-checks from several finance and technology outlets say the confusion stems from an interchange fee introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India, not a new tax on everyday wallet-to-wallet or bank-to-bank UPI payments.
According to fi.money, BOOM, TechGraph, DesiDime and Trak.in, the 1.1% charge applies only to merchant payments made through prepaid payment instruments, such as digital wallets, when the transaction value is above Rs 2,000. In plain terms, this is aimed at business payments routed through PPIs, not at the kind of person-to-person UPI transfers most consumers make every day.
That distinction is important because peer-to-peer transfers and most direct bank-linked UPI payments remain outside the fee, and so do many common-use cases such as payments for hospitals, education and tax, where exemptions already exist. The finance ministry has also been cited by Lighthouse Journalism as saying there is no proposal to impose a blanket charge on UPI users for transactions above Rs 2,000.
For Indian consumers, the practical takeaway is simple: if you are sending money from one bank account to another through UPI, the reports indicate there is no new charge just because the amount is above Rs 2,000. The fee discussed in these reports affects the merchant side of the system, mainly where prepaid wallets are used, which means the average shopper or household user should not see a new deduction on routine UPI payments.
