West Bengal accelerates land transfer to 33 industrial projects ahead of Durga Puja, signalling renewed investment push

The West Bengal government is set to transfer land for 33 industrial projects before Durga Puja, aiming to boost manufacturing and attract major investments, including a hospital project with the Adani Group and a defence initiative at Junput.

West Bengal is preparing to transfer land to 33 industrial projects before Durga Puja, in a move the state government says is part of a broader push to accelerate investment and manufacturing activity. According to the announcement, the cabinet has already approved the proposals, although officials have not yet disclosed the names of all the companies, the sites involved or the size of the parcels being offered.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the handover would be marked at a programme before the festival and insisted the process was being checked carefully. He said the state was verifying the credentials of prospective investors and trying to avoid a publicity-driven approach. The comments suggest the administration wants to present the land allotments as a more structured industrial-policy exercise rather than a symbolic announcement.

Among the projects highlighted was a proposed 2,000-bed hospital in New Town involving the Adani Group. The Economic Times reported that 1,000 of those beds would be reserved for free treatment of poorer patients, although key details such as total investment and timing have not been released. Adhikari also pointed to a planned defence project at Junput in East Midnapore and said the state had replied to a letter from the Defence Research and Development Organisation that, in his telling, had been left unanswered by the previous government.

The chief minister also said the ₹6,000-crore expansion of Haldia Petrochemicals was ready for inauguration before Durga Puja, adding another signal of industrial activity around Bengal’s port-linked manufacturing belt. Separately, the Times of India reported that Adhikari plans to meet Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai to discuss possible investment, underlining the government’s wider effort to court major private capital. He also said retail chain Style Baazar had committed to substantial store expansion in the state and that the company’s promoters had bought 100 acres in Purulia for a solar plant.
