Microsoft commits over $21 billion to expand cloud and AI infrastructure in India

Microsoft is making its largest Asian investment to date, with a $21 billion push into India to enhance cloud, AI, and skills training, including the development of a new hyperscale data centre in Hyderabad by mid-2026.

Microsoft is deepening its commitment to India with what it says is its largest investment in Asia, a roughly $21 billion push aimed at cloud, artificial intelligence and skills training. The centrepiece is a new hyperscale data centre in Hyderabad, which the company says will become its biggest in the country and is expected to come online by mid-2026.

The expansion reflects the scale of demand Microsoft sees in India’s market for Azure cloud services and its Copilot 365 AI assistant. Puneet Chandok, president of Microsoft India and South Asia, told Livemint that the Hyderabad facility is on track to open by mid-2026, while major customers such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services each hold 50,000 licences, underscoring how large enterprise adoption already is.

Microsoft’s investment is built on two separate pledges: an earlier $3 billion commitment announced in January 2025 and a further $17.5 billion disclosed in December 2025 for the 2026 to 2029 period. The company said the money will support additional capacity in Chennai and Pune, sovereign cloud services designed to keep sensitive data inside India and training for 20 million people by 2030.

The scale of the project also highlights how fiercely global cloud providers are competing in India, Asia’s second-largest economy. Microsoft’s move comes as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud continue to pour capital into local infrastructure, while India’s data-sovereignty rules create space for regional and specialised providers to serve regulated customers. For investors watching for any crypto angle, there is little sign of one: the strategy is squarely focused on conventional cloud and AI infrastructure.
