Karnataka accelerates semiconductor push with over ₹15,000 crore in new investments after key talks at SEMICON India

Karnataka is poised to become a major player in the global semiconductor industry, securing over ₹15,000 crore in commitments from major companies like Lam Research and Applied Materials after strategic discussions at SEMICON India, signalling a swift move to capitalise on India’s chip ambitions.

Karnataka is positioning itself for a fresh wave of semiconductor investment after talks with more than 20 companies at SEMICON India in Delhi, with state industry minister M.B. Patil saying the discussions could translate into more than ₹15,000 crore in new commitments. Patil said the government would move quickly to turn the interest into projects, as India’s chip ambitions continue to draw global manufacturers and suppliers.

The biggest commitments so far came from Lam Research and Applied Materials. According to the state government, Lam Research will invest ₹9,298 crore in Karnataka, while Applied Materials has outlined plans to put in ₹3,600 crore over the next 10 years. The projects are expected to deepen the state’s role in semiconductor supply chains, chip design, equipment manufacturing, precision engineering and research and development.

Land has already been allotted to Lam Research in the Adinarayanahosahalli industrial area of Doddaballapura taluk, where Karnataka says the country’s first silicon-component manufacturing facility will be built. The project is expected to create more than 1,000 direct jobs and is due to begin operations in about 18 months. Patil said the foundation stone would be laid shortly.

Applied Materials is also expanding in Bengaluru, where 140 acres are being set aside at the Bengaluru Signature Business Park for what officials describe as a major long-term manufacturing and technology project. The company’s plans are expected to support local suppliers, engineering firms, research institutions and semiconductor talent, with more than 1,000 jobs projected. Patil also said he had urged companies including Nexperia, Tokyo Electron, Fujifilm, Syrma SGS, AT&S, CG Semi and Ericsson to consider Karnataka for future manufacturing.
