JSW Group plans ₹1.2 lakh crore investment surge in Karnataka, boosting industrial ecosystem

JSW Group announces a massive ₹1.2 lakh crore investment plan in Karnataka over five years, spanning steel, energy, and infrastructure, reinforcing the state’s expanding industrial ecosystem.

JSW Group is planning to invest about ₹1.2 lakh crore in Karnataka over the next five years, in a fresh sign of how aggressively the state is courting large industrial groups as it seeks to deepen its manufacturing base, state industries minister M B Patil said after talks in Mumbai. Business Standard reported that JSW chairman Sajjan Jindal set out the wider investment plan at the Invest Karnataka 2025 summit, describing the commitment as a major boost for the state’s economy.

The proposed outlay would span steel, energy, infrastructure, cement and paints, extending a relationship that already makes Karnataka one of JSW’s most important industrial hubs. According to The Economic Times, around ₹43,000 crore of the new plan is earmarked for expanding the Vijayanagar plant and about ₹56,000 crore is slated for energy-related projects, underlining how central the Ballari-Vijayanagar belt remains to the group’s strategy. JSW has already invested roughly ₹1.30 lakh crore in the state, Patil said, and the company has repeatedly described Karnataka as its preferred location for future growth.

The scale of the planned expansion also reflects the group’s existing footprint in the region. JSW’s steel operations in Vijayanagar are among the largest in India, and the company says the site has become a major industrial centre over three decades. JSW Energy has also strengthened its Karnataka presence, commissioning a green hydrogen plant beside the Vijayanagar steel complex and signing a long-term power purchase agreement to supply 400 MW to Karnataka distribution companies from April 1, 2026. Together, these moves point to a broader industrial ecosystem that now stretches beyond steel into cleaner energy and logistics.

Patil said the state government would provide all necessary support for the new investment, part of a wider outreach that also brought meetings with other companies in Mumbai, including L&T, Bisleri International and Raymond Lifestyle. Bisleri has indicated it is ready to expand capacity in Karnataka, with the prospect of about 2,000 new jobs, according to the minister. Separately, JSW Infrastructure has moved ahead with a ₹380 crore multi-modal logistics park in Ballari, further reinforcing the group’s long-term stake in the state’s industrial growth.
