India's retail sector sees early festive boost from Independence Day celebrations

Indian retail sales experienced a significant surge during Independence Day, signalling a confident start to the peak shopping season with strong performances across electronics, groceries, and apparel, and a notable shift towards premium products amid sustained consumer spending.

Independence Day has given India’s retail sector an early festive lift, with brands and merchants reporting stronger sales than a year earlier and signalling a more confident start to the country’s peak shopping season. According to an Economic Times report, several businesses saw value sales rise by as much as 25 per cent, while volumes increased 5 to 7 per cent, suggesting shoppers are still spending even as prices stay elevated in a number of categories.

The improvement was visible across both online and physical stores. The Economic Times said footfall at key retail destinations rose 8 to 10 per cent year on year, while categories such as electronics, groceries and apparel led the rebound. The stronger showing is encouraging for retailers heading into Onam later this month and the longer run-up to Diwali, which remains India’s biggest consumption period.

Consumer electronics and appliances were among the clearest winners. The Economic Times reported that demand for smartphones, laptops and televisions rose despite price increases of as much as 40 per cent over the past 10 months, driven by higher input costs. Amazon India said demand more than doubled in smartphones, electronics, fashion and beauty, while Flipkart saw several iPhone and television models sell out. Super Plastronics, which sells Kodak, Thomson and Blaupunkt televisions, ran through its stock on both marketplaces, and Haier India said sales jumped 45 to 50 per cent in value and 30 to 35 per cent in volume, helped by premium products such as front-load washing machines, side-by-side refrigerators and larger televisions.

Retailers also pointed to a clear shift towards premium products rather than simply bargain hunting. Reliance Retail said it had its strongest Independence Day sales to date, with growth of more than 20 per cent across grocery, electronics, apparel and its JioMart platform. Lifestyle International and Vijay Sales also reported double-digit gains, while the Times of India noted that executives now see the holiday promotions as a useful marker for broader festive demand. The pattern suggests that discounts helped bring shoppers in, but that stronger sentiment, higher footfall and a willingness to trade up were just as important in lifting spending.
