India’s manufacturing sector has become a key pillar of the economy, with exports, defence, and electronics leading a notable rebound supported by record production and investment commitments, signalling a shift towards becoming a global supply-chain hub.
India’s manufacturing sector is expanding into one of the main pillars of the economy, with the government saying it now accounts for about 16% to 17% of gross domestic product and supports more than 27 million jobs. A factsheet released by New Delhi said the sector’s gross value added at constant prices has grown at a compound annual rate of 10.88%, underscoring the scale of the rebound in industrial activity and investment.
The same statement pointed to a sharp lift in trade momentum, saying merchandise exports in July 2026 rose to $44.24 billion from $36.98 billion a year earlier. Manufacturing output also increased 7.8% in June 2026, suggesting that industrial strength is feeding through into wider economic performance even as global demand remains uneven.
Defence manufacturing has been one of the clearest examples of that shift. According to the Ministry of Defence, annual domestic defence production hit a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY26, up 15.6% from the previous year and almost four times the level seen in FY14. The ministry said public-sector units still account for most output, but the private sector’s contribution has grown, reaching roughly a quarter of total production and helping drive exports to a record Rs 38,424 crore.
Electronics is another fast-growing area. The factsheet said production climbed from Rs 11.32 lakh crore in FY25 to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in FY26, while mobile-phone exports reached Rs 2.59 lakh crore. It also said 12 manufacturing units have been approved under the Semicon India programme, with investment commitments of more than Rs 1.64 lakh crore, including fabrication, packaging and display projects. Together with strong pharmaceutical production and exports, the government said these trends have strengthened India’s case as a global manufacturing and supply-chain destination.
