SaveSage and IndiGo’s new alliance rewards consumers with airline points for routine household payments, signalling a strategic shift in India’s burgeoning credit card ecosystem and travel loyalty landscape.
SaveSage has teamed up with IndiGo’s BluChip loyalty scheme to let customers earn rewards on credit card and utility bill payments made through the SaveSage app, in a move that pushes travel benefits deeper into routine household spending. According to the companies, users will receive 1 IndiGo BluChip for every ₹1,000 paid, up to 1,000 BluChips a month, and the points can be redeemed for flights and other benefits within the airline’s loyalty programme. The feature is available immediately, provided users link their BluChip ID in the app.
The partnership arrives as India’s card market continues to expand quickly. A Reserve Bank of India report cited by The Economic Times showed credit card transactions rose more than 2.6 times between 2021 and 2025, while total value climbed from ₹8.9 lakh crore to ₹23.2 lakh crore. The same broad trend has been reflected in card issuance, with RBI data showing the number of credit cards in force rising from 8.25 crore in 2023 to 11.66 crore in 2026, according to The New Indian Express.
That growth has come alongside changing consumer habits. TransUnion CIBIL said the share of Indian consumers holding 3 or more credit cards has nearly doubled over the past decade, from 12% in 2016 to 22% in 2026, while Business Standard reported that credit card penetration still lags far behind richer markets. The newspaper said only about 25% of India’s credit-active population has a credit card, underscoring the room for further expansion.
The broader market is also becoming more concentrated. Economic Times reported that HDFC Bank and State Bank of India together account for nearly half of card spending, while the top 5 lenders control more than 85% of transactions. Against that backdrop, SaveSage and IndiGo are betting that adding airline rewards to ordinary bill payments will help keep customers engaged beyond flights and other traditional travel-related purchases.
