India’s private space industry shifts focus to building a sustainable commercial ecosystem

India’s private space sector is progressing beyond rocket launches, aiming to create a full commercial space ecosystem with advancements in propulsion, manufacturing, and data services, according to industry analysts.

India’s private space industry is moving beyond the race to prove it can build and fly rockets and satellites. The next stage, according to operators and analysts, is about creating the industrial base that can sustain a commercial space economy: propulsion, testing, manufacturing, supply chains and the data services that turn missions into recurring revenue. Research from Neo Capitals places the domestic space-tech market at about $8 billion in FY26E, with roughly 25% compound annual growth expected through FY30E, while also noting that downstream applications such as Earth observation, communications and geospatial analytics may scale more easily than launch hardware.

That transition is already visible in the way companies are organising themselves. Agnikul Cosmos says its in-house production model has cut engine build time to around seven days and lowered costs by 50% to 60% compared with conventional approaches, as it pushes towards booster recovery and reusable upper-stage systems. Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 mission, which successfully reached low Earth orbit in July 2026, added momentum to the sector by showing that private Indian companies can carry out full orbital launches and serve international and domestic customers from home soil.

Investors and founders are now looking for businesses with more than a single technical breakthrough. Moin SPM of Agnikul said the coming years should favour propulsion and orbital computing, arguing that better engines can raise launch frequency while on-orbit processing can create an additional revenue stream from each launch. Suyash Singh of GalaxEye said the next phase will require stronger manufacturing, deeper in-house capabilities and more robust support systems, particularly as firms move from development work to higher-volume production.

The broader ecosystem still faces familiar bottlenecks: specialised manufacturing, testing and qualification facilities, skilled talent and patient capital. But the direction of travel is clear. India’s private space scene, once defined largely by demonstrations of capability, is increasingly shifting towards a full commercial stack that includes spacecraft production, launch infrastructure, satellite operations and applications built on space-derived data.
