Samsung has introduced an India-built payment reminder tool into its latest foldable devices, showcasing its focus on local innovation to expand digital payments and penetrate tier 2 markets in India.
Samsung has added an India-developed payment reminder tool to its latest foldable smartphones, underscoring how the company is pushing more locally built features into its premium devices. The Pay Now function sits inside Now Brief, a Galaxy AI feature, and is limited to users in India. According to Samsung, it is designed to alert people before bills are due and then let them complete payments through Samsung Wallet. Reuters-style company statements said the feature was built by engineers at Samsung’s India research and development centres.
The move comes as Samsung expands its digital payments push in India with deeper Wallet integration. On its India website, the company said recent updates include UPI registration during device set-up, biometric sign-in without a PIN and broader Tap & Pay support. It has also introduced Scan QR payments through the camera or Quick Panel, cutting the number of steps needed for everyday transactions.
Samsung is pairing those software changes with a broader artificial intelligence pitch for its newest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. The company says the devices are built around personalised AI features such as Now Brief, Now Nudge and Gemini Intelligence, which are meant to surface relevant information and automate routine tasks. Samsung has also said the foldables are intended to be more useful in daily life, not just more powerful on paper.
The commercial response in India has been strong. Samsung said the 8th-generation foldables drew more than 2.71 lakh pre-orders within 72 hours of their July 22 launch, outpacing last year’s pace for the previous generation. The company also said 45% of orders came from tier 2 cities and smaller markets, as it seeks to widen adoption beyond major metros. Prices in India start at ₹1.79 lakh for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and ₹1.24 lakh for the Galaxy Z Flip8. Samsung Southwest Asia president and chief executive JB Park said the company’s focus is increasingly on creating original technology in India, not just expanding engineering headcount.
