Cybercriminals are deploying sophisticated fake alerts mimicking Apple and Amazon branding to deceive users into divulging personal information, prompting renewed vigilance for online scams.
A new scam is exploiting the fear of unauthorised charges by flashing full-screen warnings that claim an Apple ID or Amazon account has been used for a suspicious purchase. The messages are designed to look official, with cloned branding, warning icons and urgent language that pushes victims to act before they have time to think, according to security researchers.
The tactic is effective because it combines a believable amount with technical-sounding language, including references to a “pre-authorisation”, while pressing users to call immediately or take action without delay. Malwarebytes says scammers are increasingly using phishing tools that can make these fake alerts look highly convincing, especially when they mimic the layout and logos of well-known brands.
The broader pattern is familiar. Malwarebytes has recently warned about criminals posing as Amazon support, often using fake recall notices to lure people into handing over personal details. ConsumerAffairs and Aura have reported similar Amazon-themed phishing campaigns in which victims receive unsolicited texts about recalled orders and are sent to bogus sign-in pages. The Federal Trade Commission has also flagged robocall scams in which imposters claim suspicious or unauthorised activity on Amazon or Apple accounts and try to get people to respond immediately.
The safest response is not to click the link, call the number or provide any information. Security experts say customers should go directly to Amazon or Apple through their own apps or websites, check for any legitimate alerts there and treat any unexpected warning as suspicious until proven otherwise.
