India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has soared to over ₹1.55 lakh crore in gross merchandise value, transforming public procurement through digitalisation and inclusive growth, as Minister Piyush Goyal highlights the platform’s rapid expansion and impact on small, women-led, and startup businesses.
Government e-Marketplace has crossed ₹1,55,000 crore in gross merchandise value, up from ₹422 crore 10 years ago, as India’s public procurement system has moved deeper into digital buying, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said. According to Goyal, the platform has changed the way government purchases are made by bringing the process end-to-end online and expanding access for suppliers across the country.
The ministry said cumulative GMV on GeM topped ₹20 lakh crore as of August 7, 2026, from more than 3.78 crore orders since launch. The platform now has over 12.28 lakh micro and small enterprises registered, including more than 2.25 lakh women-led businesses, along with over 42,000 startups. Goyal said women-led MSEs have completed more than 50 lakh orders worth over ₹99,800 crore, while startups have fulfilled orders worth more than ₹65,900 crore.
The platform’s growth has also been reflected in earlier milestones. Industry group IBEF said GeM had already reached ₹18.4 lakh crore in cumulative GMV and handled ₹5 lakh crore in financial year 2025-26. It had also reported ₹5.4 lakh crore in FY25, underscoring the rapid rise in adoption by government buyers and sellers.
Beyond scale, GeM has been positioned as a policy tool for inclusion and efficiency. Goyal said it has improved price discovery, shortened procurement timelines, reduced costs and strengthened accountability through digital processes. The platform has also expanded support for smaller sellers through features such as Startup Runway, ODOP GeM Bazar and GeM Sahay, while more than 69,000 SC/ST-owned MSEs have together executed orders worth over ₹23,000 crore.
