Rupee weakens amid rising crude prices and global market uncertainties

The Indian rupee declines against the US dollar as crude oil prices rebound and geopolitical tensions escalate, adding pressure to India’s import-dependent economy amid shifting US Federal Reserve expectations.

The Indian rupee started the week weaker against the US dollar as crude prices continued to recover and the greenback regained some ground after Friday’s slump. The dollar-rupee pair climbed to around 95.22, while MCX crude oil futures for August 19 rose more than 1% to about Rs. 7,500 in early trade.

The move matters because India is a large oil importer, which means higher crude prices can pressure the currency by widening the country’s import bill. Reuters reported that the rupee has recently fallen to a record low against the dollar, underscoring how sensitive it remains to swings in energy prices and wider market unease.

Oil’s latest advance has been linked to renewed uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for a large share of global energy shipments. Iranian officials have said Tehran wants compensation before allowing navigation through the waterway, according to West Asia News Agency, while attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi fighters on Saudi energy assets have added to supply concerns.

The dollar’s bounce has also been helped by a firmer tone in global inflation expectations, but traders appear less convinced that the Federal Reserve will stay hawkish for long. CME FedWatch data show the odds of a September rate increase have fallen sharply, after weak US jobs data revived concerns about the labour market and pushed the dollar to an almost eight-week low on Friday. Technically, analysts say USD/INR remains below its 20-day exponential moving average, leaving the pair with a mild bearish bias unless it can clear that level decisively.
