Nagpur land dispute resolution enables Mahindra’s ₹15,000-crore expansion and job growth

The resolution of a long-standing land dispute in Nagpur’s industrial corridor paves the way for Mahindra & Mahindra’s largest integrated manufacturing complex in India, promising significant investment and employment opportunities in the region.

A long-running land dispute in Nagpur’s industrial corridor has been settled, clearing the way for Mahindra & Mahindra’s ₹15,000-crore investment and raising hopes of new employment for young people in the region. According to The Live Nagpur, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation has now allotted the company a contiguous 800 acres in Additional Butibori, after first transferring 500 acres and then adding a further 300-acre parcel.

Mahindra had initially sought 1,500 acres for the project, but the plan was complicated by a high-tension power line and objections from local farmers. MIDC resolved the issue by releasing land in stages, allowing the automaker to move ahead with an uninterrupted plot that officials say should help accelerate construction.

The newly added 300 acres had originally been reserved for JSW, which had already paid for the land. With JSW’s own ₹25,000-crore project in Nagpur still on hold, MIDC decided to prioritise Mahindra because it is ready to invest now, according to The Live Nagpur. JSW is expected to receive alternative land later.

Mahindra has said the Nagpur facility will be its largest integrated manufacturing complex in India, spanning 1,500 acres in Vidarbha and supported by a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar. Company statements and reports in Livemint, The Financial Express and The New Indian Express have said the plant is due to begin production in 2028 and is designed to make more than 500,000 vehicles and 100,000 tractors a year. Local officials say the broader industrial build-out in Additional Butibori, including MIDC’s plan to acquire another 3,000 acres by November, could generate thousands of jobs across manufacturing, engineering and supplier operations.
