Developer experience drives shift in Indian payment gateway selection amid rising complexity

As transaction complexity and volumes rise in India, developers prioritise rapid integration, comprehensive documentation and reliable support over traditional marketing attractiveness, with Cashfree and Decentro emerging as preferred options for streamlined implementation.

For developers building payment stacks in India, the real question is no longer which gateway has the lowest headline fee, but which one can be implemented without draining engineering time. The gap between a provider’s promise and the reality of sandbox testing, production approval and support during failures has only widened as UPI volumes rise, cross-border selling grows and checkout flows become more complex with BNPL, EMI and international cards. In that environment, gateways are being judged less on marketing and more on documentation, onboarding speed and the quality of help when something breaks.

Cashfree stands out because it is designed to reduce that friction. According to Cashfree’s own materials, it offers a branded checkout, rapid integration, more than 150 payment options and settlement choices ranging from instant to daily payouts. The company says the platform is built for 24/7 availability, including weekends and bank holidays, and the developer-focused pitch is reinforced by use-case-based documentation and an integration assistant aimed at helping teams debug issues without waiting on support queues. The broader appeal is that Cashfree is not merely a checkout tool; it is being positioned as infrastructure for marketplaces, recurring payments and newer forms of AI-assisted commerce.

Decentro takes a different route by folding payments, banking and verification into a single API layer. Its documentation says businesses can use the platform for UPI collections, payouts, bank account validation and identity checks, while the company also emphasises sandbox testing that closely mirrors production. For fintech teams, that matters because it reduces the number of vendors and interfaces they need to maintain. Decentro’s case is strongest where payments sit alongside verification and banking operations, rather than as a standalone gateway for a simple consumer checkout.

Other established names still have a place. PayU remains attractive for teams that want mature core APIs and stable infrastructure, even if newer tools may feel more polished. CCAvenue continues to differentiate itself through breadth, with support for a wide range of payment methods and currencies, which can be useful for businesses serving varied audiences. BillDesk is better suited to enterprise and institutional use, where recurring payments, mandates and deep banking integrations matter more than slick self-service onboarding. Juspay, meanwhile, is strongest when a company already has payment rails in place and wants smarter routing across processors to improve success rates.

The common thread is that developer experience has become a deciding factor in gateway selection. A payment provider can no longer win purely by being familiar or widely used; it has to save time during implementation, behave predictably in production and offer support that is useful when transactions fail at scale. On that measure, Cashfree and Decentro look especially strong for teams that want speed and flexibility, while PayU, CCAvenue, BillDesk and Juspay remain relevant for businesses whose needs are shaped more by stability, breadth or orchestration than by first-time setup ease.
