US-India trade soars past $240 billion amid growing strategic partnership

US Ambassador Sergio Gor highlights a sharp rise in bilateral trade and expanding American corporate interest in India, with over 1,000 US companies in Karnataka alone, signalling a deepening strategic alliance spanning defence, healthcare, and technology.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said American companies continue to see India as a major destination for investment, pointing to a sharp rise in bilateral trade and growing commercial links between the two countries.

Speaking at the QUANTUM exhibition in Bengaluru on Friday, Gor said trade between India and the United States has climbed to more than $240 billion from about $20 billion a decade ago. He said Karnataka alone hosts more than 1,000 American companies, underscoring the state’s role in the wider relationship. According to the ambassador, firms from the US regularly approach the embassy to ask whether India is the right place to expand.

Gor also described the partnership as broad-based, stretching across defence, healthcare, technology and supply chains. He said India supplies 40% of America’s generic pharmaceuticals and pointed to the large number of joint military exercises as evidence of deep strategic trust. He added that India’s inclusion in the US-led Pax Silica initiative marked an important step towards more resilient and secure supply chains, saying New Delhi was among the first 10 countries invited to join.

The ambassador’s remarks follow earlier comments in which he rejected reports that India had turned down an accelerated trade deal with Washington, calling them false and saying negotiations remain constructive. In previous appearances, he has also described the India-US relationship as one of the most important of the century and has highlighted cooperation in nuclear energy, advanced manufacturing, space and environmental technologies. Gor said his recent meetings with Meta, Rolls-Royce and Netflix chiefs reflected the scale of American corporate interest in India.
