Bank Nifty stabilises around 58,000 as options activity indicates cautious trading

Traders are closely watching the 58,000 level on the Bank Nifty, with options and futures data pointing to a tense, undecided near-term outlook amidst mixed stock-specific signals.

Bank Nifty traders are treating the 58,000 strike as the key near-term marker, with options activity crowded on both sides of the level and futures positioning also pointing to a tense set-up. NDTV Profit reported that the index’s futures were at 58,214.10, down 0.57%, even as futures open interest rose 20.26%, a combination that suggests fresh short positions have been added at the index level.

Options data show a broad contest around 58,000 rather than a clean directional bet. NDTV Profit said call open interest at that strike is about 23.3 lakh contracts, the highest in the displayed chain, while put open interest is about 17.5 lakh contracts. The next major put base sits at 57,000 with around 9.5 lakh contracts, while 58,500 carries the next notable call build-up at about 6.6 lakh contracts.

The latest positioning also shows traders adding fresh calls at 57,700, 57,800, 57,900 and 58,000, while put writing has been seen at 57,800, 57,900 and 58,000. At the same time, put open interest has eased at 57,700 and 58,200. Taken together, the data suggest 58,000 is acting as the immediate pivot, with neither bulls nor bears yet in full control.

The stock-specific futures picture is more mixed. Canara Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bandhan Bank and Bajaj Finance all saw weaker futures, but the fall in price alongside softer open interest in several names points more to long unwinding than to a broad fresh short build-up. Axis Direct’s weekly derivatives note also pointed to 58,000 as Bank Nifty’s pivotal strike, with 57,000 and 58,500 framing the likely near-term range.
