India’s vehicle retail market hits record July growth driven by rural demand and electric vehicle surge

India’s vehicle retail sales soared by 26% in July, marking the strongest July on record across all segments, buoyed by rural demand, lower prices post-GST overhaul, and a rise in electric vehicle adoption.

India’s vehicle retail market accelerated sharply in July, with dealer registrations rising 26% from a year earlier to 2.59 million units, according to data compiled by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations from the road transport ministry’s Vahan portal. The month marked the strongest July on record across every major segment, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and tractors, underscoring how broad the rebound has become.

Dealers said the improvement reflected a combination of lower prices after the GST rate overhaul, easier access to retail finance and supportive festival timing. The comparison with last year was also helped by a weak base, as sales had slowed ahead of the tax changes that took effect on September 22, 2025. Fada vice-president Sai Giridhar said every category posted its best-ever July.

Two-wheelers led the surge, with retail sales up 28% year on year, while passenger vehicles rose 19%, three-wheelers increased 16% and commercial vehicles climbed 24%. Independent industry coverage in late July had already pointed to a strong start for the month, with all segments expanding and factors such as stable sentiment, new model launches, lower borrowing costs and higher purchasing power adding to demand. CRISIL Ratings has also said the two-wheeler market should continue growing in fiscal 2027, supported by affordability gains from GST rationalisation and stronger exports.

Rural India outpaced cities in most categories. Two-wheeler sales in rural markets rose 29%, slightly ahead of urban growth of 28%, while passenger vehicle sales in villages advanced 25% compared with 16% in cities. Commercial vehicles also did better outside urban areas, helped by movement linked to cement, steel and mining, along with e-commerce logistics. Electric vehicles continued to gain ground, with their share of two-wheeler sales reaching a record 11.2% and their share of commercial vehicle sales rising to 3.57%, both all-time July highs. Dealers also said some buyers were shifting towards CNG, hybrids and EVs amid caution over the E20 petrol transition.
