Security experts recommend visual checks of ATMs during summer travel to prevent card skimming scams. Signs of tampering such as loose or mismatched parts could indicate fraud, with consumers advised to stay vigilant, cover PINs, and report suspicious activity immediately.
As summer travel and cash withdrawals rise, security experts say a quick visual check of an ATM can help consumers spot common fraud tactics before they insert a card. The warning is simple: if anything about the machine looks loose, mismatched or recently added, it may be safer to walk away and use another cash point.
One of the most common scams is skimming, in which criminals attach a fake card reader over the real one to capture card data. The FBI says these devices can be built to look convincing, while the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation warns that thieves may also use hidden cameras or keypad overlays to capture PINs. Signs of tampering can include a card slot that feels loose, parts that appear misaligned or panels that seem different in colour or texture.
Experts also advise customers to watch the keypad closely. A keypad that is thicker than usual, moves slightly or does not feel normal to the touch may have been covered by a fraudulent overlay. Covering the hand that enters the PIN remains one of the simplest defences, and the FBI says ATMs in well-lit indoor locations are generally safer than isolated machines outside shops or petrol stations.
If a card is retained by the machine, users are urged not to leave the scene before contacting the bank and asking for the card to be blocked. The same applies if strangers are lingering nearby, watching transactions or pressing to “help”. After any cash withdrawal, customers should check their mobile banking app or account activity promptly and report anything suspicious straight away, a step that several consumer-safety advisories say can limit losses and speed up the response.
