Kyrgyzstan’s National Bank warns of sophisticated WhatsApp scam targeting individuals' assets

The National Bank of Kyrgyzstan has issued a warning about a layered WhatsApp scam that manipulates victims into revealing sensitive information and transferring money, using fake documents and impersonation tactics to appear official.

The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic has warned people about a WhatsApp scam that can start with a seemingly routine call and end with victims losing money, and in some cases even property, according to Vesti.kg and other local reports. The regulator said fraudsters are using a layered script designed to build trust, create panic and push people into handing over sensitive information or making urgent transfers.

In the first stage, callers pose as mobile network staff and say a contract for services must be renewed immediately. They then ask for a four-digit code sent by SMS. According to the National Bank’s warning, that code is then used to move the conversation on to the next stage, in which impostors claiming to be from the Tunduk government services portal say the account has been hacked and personal data exposed.

From there, the story becomes more threatening. The scammers allegedly ask questions about income, bank accounts, deposits and assets, then a final caller steps in pretending to be from the National Bank or law enforcement. The aim is to convince the target that a special operation is under way, that the discussion must stay secret, and that the only safe option is to move money to a so-called secure account or even take out a loan. Similar warnings have also been reported about fraudsters using fake documents, the National Bank’s logo and, in some cases, Telegram bots to make the scam look official.

For ordinary people, the key point is that the National Bank says it does not serve private customers, does not grant loans, does not ask for SMS codes and does not run phone-based operations. It is also not sending official documents through messengers. The bank’s advice is simple: end the call, do not share personal details, do not transfer money, and contact your own bank straight away if card blocking is needed.
