ICICI Bank appears to support UPI for Hindu Undivided Family savings accounts, but customers face procedural nuances at branch level and app setup, highlighting evolving digital banking integration for shared family finances in India.
ICICI Bank customers who hold a Hindu Undivided Family, or HUF, savings account may be able to use UPI on that account, according to a user post on TradingQnA and ICICI Bank’s own product pages. One forum contributor said their personal savings account and HUF account were both visible in the same app, linked to the same mobile number, and each had UPI activated successfully through ICICI’s app. ICICI Bank says it offers HUF savings accounts and allows customers to view HUF and personal accounts together on iMobile and Net Banking.
That matters because HUFs are used by some families in India to manage shared money and investments, and the tax treatment can be different from a regular individual account. ICICI Bank says an HUF is treated as a separate taxpayer and may be eligible for deductions under provisions such as sections 80C, 80D and 80G, subject to the normal tax rules. To open such an account, the bank says customers need an HUF PAN and KYC documents for the karta, the person who manages the family unit.
The practical wrinkle, as the forum user noted, is that branch-level staff may not always be familiar with the paperwork and linking steps involved. The user said they had to complete a special form to link the HUF account to their main profile, and that the accounts were opened at different ICICI branches. ICICI Bank’s own UPI guidance says customers can create a UPI ID in iMobile, link multiple accounts and choose which account to use for a payment, while the bank also notes that failed UPI debits are usually reversed quickly and that PINs should never be shared.
For families considering an HUF account, the takeaway is simple: UPI support appears to be available at least in ICICI’s ecosystem, but the process may depend on the branch, the app setup and whether the account details line up cleanly. ICICI Bank says linked accounts must generally have matching core details, which is why some users may need extra back-office steps before everything appears neatly in one place.
