India’s LPG customers face a fresh compliance deadline on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as the government prepares to make biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory from October 1 for subsidised domestic cooking gas. The change affects users of Indane, HP Gas and Bharat Gas, and reports say households that miss the cut-off risk interruptions to refill booking until their e-KYC is completed.
According to GoodReturns, the Oil Ministry has already pushed the deadline back several times this year, extending it from June 30 to a series of later dates before settling on September 30. The latest deadline is meant to give consumers enough time to finish the verification process, which the government says is intended to ensure that only eligible customers receive the subsidy and to reduce the diversion of domestic cylinders into commercial and industrial use.
The scale of the drive has been substantial. GoodReturns reported that oil marketing companies have sent more than 12 crore SMS and WhatsApp reminders since October 2023, while distributors and delivery staff have followed up individually with customers who still had not completed authentication. The ministry has also used camps at distributorships, busy public locations and rural areas, along with interactive voice prompts, mobile alerts and publicity through newspapers and social media.
The financial impact of missing the deadline could be significant. GoodReturns reported that consumers who fail to complete biometric authentication may have to pay commercial rates rather than subsidised domestic prices. In Delhi, for example, a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder is priced at Rs 942, while a 19 kg commercial cylinder costs Rs 2,747.50, a difference of more than Rs 1,800. Similar gaps exist in other major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The ministry has also said the implicit subsidy on a 14.2 kg cylinder stood at around Rs 210 in September 2026, after rising to Rs 721 in June.
For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the consequences could be even more disruptive. Reports cited by GoodReturns say PMUY customers who do not complete the verification may be unable to book refills until the process is finished. The article also said that Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL are expected to pause subsidy benefits for customers who have not completed biometric authentication from October 1, with refill bookings at regulated retail prices to resume only after authentication is done.
Consumers can complete the process in several ways. GoodReturns said authentication can be carried out during refill delivery through the distributor’s mobile app, at a distributor showroom, or through company apps at home. Indane customers are directed to the IndianOil One app, Bharat Gas users to HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers to HP Pay or the Aadhaar FaceRD app. Video guides for self-service e-KYC are also available on the PMUY portal.
