CBDT extends key audit and return deadlines for Assessment Year 2026-27 to ease compliance pressure

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has postponed crucial deadlines for audit-eligible taxpayers for AY 2026-27, providing additional time for filings amid mounting compliance pressures for businesses and professionals.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has pushed back key compliance dates for taxpayers who fall within the audit category for Assessment Year 2026-27, giving businesses, partnerships, LLPs and specified professionals more time to complete their filings. According to the CBDT’s announcement, the deadline for furnishing the tax audit report has been moved from 30 September 2026 to 21 October 2026, while the return-filing deadline for covered audit cases now falls on 21 November 2026.

The change is aimed at taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit under the Income-tax Act, 1961, including those covered by Section 44AB and the relevant category under Section 139(1). That means the relief is not universal. Salary earners and others outside the audit framework do not automatically get the same extension, and any separate statutory deadlines, such as transfer pricing reporting requirements, continue to apply on their own timetable.

For companies, LLPs and firms, the extra time may ease pressure in the final stretch of compliance season. Businesses typically need to close books, reconcile ledgers, verify deductions and claims, complete audit reports, and then prepare the relevant return form. Tax advisers say the extension should be used to improve accuracy rather than to delay work until the new deadline. The same caution applies to professionals with higher gross receipts and to taxpayers whose filings involve additional disclosures, such as international transactions.

The CBDT has said a formal order or notification will be issued separately to give the announcement statutory effect. Until that happens, taxpayers are being advised to treat the revised dates as the operative schedule for the affected category, while continuing to check the final notification and ensuring that all audit and return-filing documentation is ready well before the new deadlines.
