NSE partners with Augmont to pioneer faster, more transparent electronic gold trading in India

The National Stock Exchange of India teams up with Augmont Gold Tech to streamline the creation and trading of Electronic Gold Receipts, aiming to boost gold market participation and bring greater transparency to gold investments.

The National Stock Exchange of India has brought in Augmont Gold Tech Private Limited as a key partner in a push to expand trading in Electronic Gold Receipts, a digital instrument designed to let investors hold gold in dematerialised form. According to Business Today, the arrangement is intended to make it easier to move gold into and out of the EGR system while doing so inside a regulated market framework.

EGRs are electronic securities backed by physical gold stored in SEBI-accredited vaults. They can be held through depositories and traded on the exchange, giving investors exposure to gold without taking delivery of bars or coins. In practice, the structure is meant to reduce the usual frictions of owning physical gold, including storage, purity checks and making charges, while preserving the option to convert receipts back into metal when needed.

The exchange says the initiative is part of a broader effort to deepen participation in the gold market and improve transparency and price discovery. Business Today reported that NSE expects jewellers, refiners, traders and institutional investors to benefit from a more organised system for creating, trading and extinguishing EGRs. NewKerala and other outlets said Augmont will provide technical and on-the-ground support, reflecting its role across the gold value chain.

Sriram Krishnan, chief business development officer at NSE, said the empanelment would help simplify the creation and extinguishment of EGRs and make gold investment more accessible. Ketan Kothari, whole-time director at Augmont Enterprises, said the company aims to make the conversion between physical and electronic gold “simpler, faster and more transparent” for both trade and investors. The partnership comes as market participants look for ways to fold gold more fully into India’s formal financial system.
