Vedanta Group plans a significant investment in Odisha, featuring a 1,000-bed super-speciality hospital and a 2 million tonnes-a-year aluminium smelter, aiming to deepen regional infrastructure and job creation, while securing raw-material sources.
Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal has met Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Bhubaneswar to press a package of projects that would deepen the company’s presence in the state, including a proposed 1,000-bed super-speciality hospital for western Odisha. The plan, outlined in the company’s announcement, is aimed at improving access to advanced care in a region where large-scale medical infrastructure remains limited.
The discussions also covered a far larger industrial expansion in Jharsuguda, where Vedanta is seeking to build a 2 million tonnes-a-year aluminium smelter at an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh crore. According to the company’s operations material, Vedanta already runs a major alumina refinery in Lanjigarh and one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters in Jharsuguda, a site that has become central to its India business. The state government has allotted 500 acres for the new project, and the company says it could create about 50,000 direct and indirect jobs once construction and operations get under way.
Vedanta is also pushing to secure a more dependable raw-material base for its Odisha operations. The company and the state are said to be focusing on the Sijimali and Karlapat bauxite mines, which would support feedstock needs for the expanding refinery and smelter network. That approach fits with Vedanta’s broader strategy in Odisha, where it has already invested heavily and recently expanded billet production capacity at Jharsuguda to 830,000 tonnes a year, strengthening its position in supply chains serving construction, transport, renewable energy and other downstream industries.
The latest proposals build on years of industrial expansion in the state. Vedanta’s Jharsuguda complex has long been presented by the company as a flagship asset, with the group saying it has supported large-scale employment and broader social investment in health, education and community infrastructure. The new hospital pledge adds a social dimension to a plan that remains heavily industrial in scope, linking healthcare, mining and metals production in one long-term push to reinforce Vedanta’s footprint in Odisha.
