Pine Labs plans to roll out 10 lakh Soundboxes nationwide to enhance UPI adoption beyond low-value transactions, supporting the growth of digital commerce and financial inclusion across India.
Pine Labs has announced plans to deploy 10 lakh Soundboxes across India in a move it says is designed to deepen digital payments acceptance as UPI spreads beyond small-ticket purchases. The company described the rollout as a strategic investment in payments infrastructure, aimed at widening usage in new markets and across more business segments. According to Pine Labs, the initiative is intended to support the next stage of digital commerce growth in the country.
B Amrish Rau, chief executive of Pine Labs, said the company wants to back the ecosystem as new ways to monetise payments emerge. “With new monetization levers emerging, we want to walk the talk by investing back into the ecosystem and deepen digital payments adoption. Pine Labs’ commitment to deploy 10 lakh soundboxes reflects our belief that sustainable economics and financial inclusion can reinforce each other,” Rau said in the company announcement. The firm said the devices are built on a cloud-first architecture that gives merchants real-time audio confirmation when a payment is completed.
The Soundboxes are also designed to be managed at scale. Pine Labs says the platform allows remote device administration, over-the-air software updates and central monitoring, which should make it easier for merchants to expand payment acceptance without adding as much operational complexity. Moneycontrol reported that the rollout is part of a broader push to extend UPI use beyond everyday low-value transactions, a sign that India’s digital payments market is continuing to move up the value chain.
The announcement also fits a wider pattern of Pine Labs expanding its merchant payments footprint. The company recently said it had won multi-year contracts from Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Indian Oil to modernise digital payment systems across petrol pumps and merchant outlets. Its product range now includes devices such as the Mini POS QR Soundbox, which can handle QR, card and contactless NFC payments, underlining how competition in India’s payments market is shifting towards bundled hardware, software and managed services.
