A 25-year-old Mumbai entrepreneur’s detailed breakdown of her Rs 52,000 monthly expenditure reveals the true financial pressures of living independently in India’s commercial hub, with fixed costs dominating her budget.
Living on her own in Mumbai has left a 25-year-old founder with a monthly bill of roughly Rs 52,000 before she even counts savings, shopping, travel or surprise costs, according to an Instagram video that has drawn wide attention online.
Jahnvi Shah broke down the budget item by item, saying her share of rent for a three-bedroom flat with two other occupants is about Rs 16,500 a month. She added another Rs 2,700 for rented furniture, while groceries and food delivery through services such as Blinkit and Zomato typically cost between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000, depending on the month, according to her account.
Shah said commuting across the city for work and meetings comes to around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 a month, while electricity, Wi-Fi and domestic help together add about Rs 3,500. One of her biggest recurring outgoings is an iPhone instalment of Rs 12,000 a month, and she estimated subscriptions and cloud storage at another Rs 1,500. Together, she said, the regular total lands at around Rs 52,000 before discretionary spending is included.
Her post has struck a chord because it reflects a broader truth about urban living in India’s financial capital: the headline cost is not always the only pressure point. The biggest monthly drain, as Shah’s video suggests, can come from a stack of fixed payments that leave little room for flexibility. She summed up the trade-off bluntly: “Expensive? Yes. Worth the independence? Also yes.”
