India’s gig workers increasingly rely on tax filing to reclaim withheld income and build financial records

As automatic tax deductions rise among India’s gig workers, platforms and innovative tools are making tax return filing a key part of financial management, enhancing formalisation and income recovery.

For many gig workers in India, filing an income tax return is no longer just a year-end chore but part of how they manage their earnings. Delivery partners often have 1% deducted from payouts as tax at source, and those small deductions can add up over a year, especially for workers whose income stays below the taxable threshold. In that setting, tax filing has become a route to reclaiming money that was withheld and, increasingly, to building a financial record that may help with future credit applications.

The Economic Times reported that platforms are now weaving tax support into the apps workers already use to earn a living. ClearTax, which works with gig platforms on return filing, said filings through its system have risen sharply over the past three assessment years, from 2.5 lakh in assessment year 2023-24 to 5.5 lakh in AY2025-26 and about 11 lakh in AY2026-27. The same trend was described by The Times of India, which said the rise reflects a broader push towards tax compliance in India’s gig economy.

ClearTax has also been promoting a WhatsApp-based filing process for workers on platforms such as Zomato and Urban Company, according to material on its own site. The company says the service uses artificial intelligence and supports multiple languages, with the aim of making return filing easier for low-income and blue-collar workers who may have limited familiarity with the tax system. Microsoft India has separately highlighted the WhatsApp model as part of a financial inclusion effort for gig workers.

The bigger shift is practical as well as administrative. For workers who see tax deducted automatically from modest earnings, a refund can be a meaningful cash boost. For platforms, offering filing help is becoming part of the service they provide. For workers, it is increasingly a small but important step towards formalising income in a sector that has long been defined by informality.
