NSE closing auction hits second-highest turnover amid FTSE index rebalancing

The National Stock Exchange’s closing auction session reached ₹16,613 crore, driven by FTSE index rebalancing and upcoming Nifty reorganisation, signalling increased activity in passive investing and derivatives trading.

The National Stock Exchange’s closing auction session saw turnover surge to ₹16,613 crore on Thursday, as trading was lifted by the rebalancing of FTSE indices, Business Standard reported. The figure was the second-highest since the special session was introduced, coming behind the record ₹39,718 crore seen on August 31 during MSCI index rebalancing.

The closing auction session currently applies only to stocks in the futures and options segment, but it has become a key pressure point for passive funds when global index providers reshuffle their benchmarks. Such reviews often force index-tracking investors to adjust India holdings in a narrow window, producing sharp but temporary jumps in end-of-day volumes. Reuters-style market watchers have also noted that the latest spike came amid a busy period for derivatives trading, with September’s expiry events adding to activity.

Attention is now turning to the next Nifty rebalancing at the end of the month. Moneycontrol reported that BSE Ltd is poised to enter the Nifty 50, replacing Wipro Ltd, in a move that could draw about $639 million in passive inflows. Nifty Indices says its semi-annual reviews typically fall on the last working day of March and September, meaning another burst of trading could follow if the reshuffle goes ahead as expected.
