India’s power-sector emissions remained steady from 2024 to mid-2026 as a surge in solar capacity offset increased electricity demand, according to Carbon Brief’s analysis.
India’s power-sector carbon dioxide emissions were unchanged over the first half of 2024 to the first half of 2026, even as electricity demand rose by 7%, according to Carbon Brief’s latest analysis. The reason was a sharp rise in clean electricity, led by solar, which expanded fast enough to cover the entire increase in demand. Over the same two-year period, India added 77 gigawatts of solar capacity, helping prevent a rise in emissions from coal-fired generation.
