Comviva appoints Sanjiv Patankar to drive expansion in digital finance and AI ecosystem

Comviva has named Sanjiv Patankar as head of its fintech business, aiming to accelerate growth in digital wallets, embedded finance, and AI-driven financial ecosystems amidst increasing global competition.

Comviva has appointed Sanjiv Patankar to lead its fintech business as the Indian software company looks to deepen its presence in digital wallets, payments orchestration, embedded finance and tokenisation. The move, announced in New Delhi on 16 September 2026, places Patankar in charge of a portfolio that Comviva says is central to its next phase of growth in global digital financial services.

Patankar joins from Giesecke+Devrient ePayments, where Comviva says he spent eight years overseeing its global ePayments product range. The company said he brings nearly 30 years of experience across fintech, banking technology, mobility and software products, and previously held leadership roles at IBM Software Labs, Infosys and Ericsson. Comviva’s own leadership page says he also helped establish Vodafone’s Emerging Markets R&D Centre and holds an engineering degree and an MBA from Warwick Business School.

Rajesh Chandiramani, chief executive of Comviva, said in the company announcement that Patankar’s background in digital payments and product innovation would support expansion in a market being reshaped by the convergence of payments, embedded finance, digital identity and artificial intelligence. Patankar said Comviva had an opportunity to move beyond transaction-led platforms towards what he described as intelligent, connected financial ecosystems, with AI and tokenisation playing a larger role.

The appointment comes as Comviva continues to promote the scale of its fintech business. The company says its mobiquity Pay platform is deployed in more than 50 countries, has more than 500 million registered customers across 70-plus deployments and processes half a trillion dollars a year. Separate Comviva materials also point to a payment orchestration layer designed to support multiple payment methods and faster deployment across geographies, while the firm has been highlighting embedded payments, digital wallets and interoperability as key themes in recent product discussions. Industry recognition from IBS Intelligence and a recent milestone claim of more than $1 billion in daily processing suggest Comviva is seeking to position itself as a major player in both emerging and developed markets.
