India’s digital life certificate deadline approaches for pensioners amid convenience boost

Pensioners across India must submit their annual Jeevan Pramaan Patra by November 30 to ensure uninterrupted payments, with the government-backed digital service offering easier, contactless verification methods for elderly retirees.

Pensioners in India have until November 30 to submit their annual life certificate, known as Jeevan Pramaan Patra, if they want pension payments to continue without interruption. The digital service, backed by the government, is designed to spare older people the need to visit a bank, post office or other pension disbursing office in person.

The filing window opens earlier for the oldest pensioners. Those aged 80 and above may submit their certificate from October 1, while pensioners under 80 can begin from November 1. The certificate must be provided each year to an authorised pension disbursing agency such as a bank or post office, and missing the deadline can lead to a pause in payments until the document is filed.

Jeevan Pramaan uses Aadhaar-based biometric authentication to create a Digital Life Certificate after a pensioner’s identity is verified. The certificate is then stored in an electronic repository that pension offices can access online, which reduces the need for physical paperwork and in-person verification. According to the service details, pensioners can generate the certificate through the Jeevan Pramaan application or at a nearby centre run by a Common Service Centre, bank or government office.

Pensioners can submit the certificate through several channels, including the Jeevan Pramaan portal, the UMANG app, doorstep banking agents, biometric devices at post offices, face authentication and physical submission at bank branches. After authentication, the pensioner receives an SMS with the certificate ID, and a PDF copy can also be downloaded later from the website. For many retirees, especially those who are elderly or infirm, the system has become an important way to avoid a potentially difficult annual trip.
