India has launched OneTag, a revolutionary system allowing FASTag users to switch issuing banks without replacing the physical sticker, simplifying the toll payment process and enhancing portability.
India has introduced OneTag, a portability system that lets FASTag users move to a different issuing bank without replacing the sticker on their vehicle. The launch, announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, is meant to remove one of the most cumbersome parts of the current FASTag process. According to reports from The Times of India and The Economic Times, the new framework was developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited and the National Payments Corporation of India.
At present, motorists who want to change issuers must close the existing FASTag account, complete fresh onboarding and obtain a new tag. Under OneTag, that physical replacement will no longer be necessary, with users expected to manage the switch through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app. The process will still include eligibility checks, verification, consent and selection of a new issuer. The existing issuer will continue to handle customer verification and settle any outstanding wallet issues, including refunds and pending transactions, until the transfer is complete.
The move does not alter the way toll booths operate. Toll acquirers and plazas will continue to process payments under the National Electronic Toll Collection framework, so the change is aimed at making the back-end customer experience more flexible rather than changing the toll payment system itself. In practical terms, the government is trying to make FASTag behave more like a portable financial account, allowing users to switch banks while keeping the same tag in place.
