India updates GST registration process with auto-fill feature for multiple registrations under same PAN

India’s Goods and Services Tax Network has introduced an auto-fill function for businesses applying for additional GST registrations under the same PAN, streamlining the process and reducing paperwork from 1 September 2026.

India’s Goods and Services Tax Network has added an auto-fill feature for businesses seeking an extra GST registration under the same Permanent Account Number, or PAN. According to tax advisory reports, the facility went live on 1 September 2026 and is aimed at applicants that already have an active GSTIN linked to that PAN, whether the new registration is in the same state or elsewhere in India.

The process is built into Part B of FORM GST REG-01. Applicants can choose “Yes – Auto-Populate Details”, after which the Primary Authorised Signatory for the existing GSTIN must approve the request through an OTP sent to the registered contact details. Once that consent is verified, the system pulls eligible information already held by GSTN and places it into the new application.

The pre-filled fields are not fixed, so applicants can check the entries and edit them before moving ahead. GSTN also alerts the relevant promoters or partners by SMS and email once verification is complete, reducing the risk of missed updates during the registration process.

The change is likely to be most useful for expanding firms that need another registration but do not want to re-enter the same basic details each time. Under GST rules, a business can hold multiple GSTINs under one PAN, including registrations in different states or for separate business lines, although duplicate registrations in the same state can create compliance problems, according to tax specialists. The new function does not alter those rules, but it does make the paperwork lighter for applicants that qualify.
