Delhi’s GST department confiscated approximately 50 tonnes of goods worth nearly Rs 5 crore from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, in a major operation to curb unaccounted freight and tax evasion involving railway consignments from Andhra Pradesh.
Delhi’s GST department has seized about 50 tonnes of goods worth nearly Rs 5 crore at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, in an operation carried out with railway officials after intelligence suggested the cargo was being moved without required paperwork, according to ANI and NDV Today. The consignment had arrived on a train from Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh and included roughly 25 tonnes of copper scrap valued at about Rs 3 crore, along with another 25 tonnes of mixed scrap, clothing and other goods worth around Rs 2 crore.
Officials are now checking the seized material and associated records to determine whether GST rules were breached. The department said it is also widening surveillance of freight moving by rail to spot unaccounted consignments and possible tax evasion, while improving coordination with railway authorities along key routes.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government would not tolerate tax evasion or the loss of public revenue. She said the administration would strengthen monitoring across transport networks and press businesses to comply with tax rules and operate transparently.
The seizure comes amid a broader enforcement push in Delhi. Earlier this month, the city’s anti-evasion wing confiscated more than 4.2 lakh imported Esse Light cigarettes worth about Rs 65 lakh after finding them in breach of legal requirements, including mandatory health warnings. In another case last November, the CGST Delhi South Commissionerate said it had uncovered a fake input tax credit racket worth nearly Rs 31.95 crore, highlighting the use of data checks and invoice trail analysis to detect GST fraud.
