National Consumer Helpline secures over ₹105 crore in refunds amid rising e-commerce disputes

The National Consumer Helpline has facilitated refunds exceeding ₹105 crore for over 1.66 lakh grievances across 35 sectors in just over a year, highlighting the role of digital complaint resolutions in strengthening consumer rights in India.

The National Consumer Helpline helped secure more than ₹105 crore in refunds for consumers across 35 sectors over a 15-month period, according to the Consumer Affairs Ministry. The ministry said the refunds were linked to 1,66,189 grievance cases handled between 25 April 2025 and 31 July 2026.

E-commerce accounted for the biggest share of the money returned, with 1,00,466 complaints leading to refunds of more than ₹74 crore. Travel and tourism was next, with refunds of more than ₹10 crore. The ministry said refund amounts in e-commerce cases between May 2026 and July 2026 ranged from ₹1 to ₹35,83,790, showing the wide spread of disputes handled by the helpline.

Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the helpline was strengthening consumer protection by resolving complaints before cases moved into litigation. The ministry said the National Consumer Helpline works by sending grievances digitally to companies for action within set timelines, while tracking responses and consumer feedback. It added that complaints had come from both major cities and remote areas, underlining the platform’s national reach. In one case cited by the ministry, a consumer in Bengaluru received a full refund of ₹47,490 after repeated delays in the delivery of a mobile phone. In another, a buyer in Andhra Pradesh got a refund after receiving the wrong product. A consumer in Udalguri, Assam, also recovered a ₹5,000 booking amount after a two-wheeler purchase was cancelled and the refund was delayed.
